What is Enduro-Lume™?

Enduro-Lume™ is PAR WEBER's patent-pending electroluminescent illumination system for wristwatches that glows continuously for years before requiring a fresh battery. It has a number of advantages over current wristwatch illumination systems: it doesn't fade over the course of a night, it's not radioactive, and it has a very long service life.

How does Enduro-Lume™ work?

Located at each hour index, specialized semiconductor emitters (LEDs) illuminate the dial from the bezel inwards. These emitters are calibrated to project a wavelength optimized for how dark-adjusted eyes perceive light, enabling you to read your watch at any time, day or night.

Will the LEDs burn out?

The short answer is no. We expect the LEDs to last as long as the timepiece - decades to come.

To explain why, let's talk about why household LED light bulbs do eventually "die" and why we expect the Enduro-Lume™ system to live on and on. There are two main failure modes for household LED light bulbs: 1) components in the driver circuit ultimately fail, and 2) heat generated by electrical current across the LED chip itself causes it to fail.

Let's start with #1, which is in fact much more common than LED failure. In this study by the U.S. Department of Energy, driver circuitry failure is approximately 6 times more likely to cause premature "burn out" in LED street lamps than the LED packages themselves. In other words, when an LED light bulb "burns out," the LEDs are usually in perfect working condition.

The driver circuitry in LED light bulbs needs to be more complex in order to convert AC mains power to the DC power which LEDs require. Our system is battery powered, which means it's already DC and therefore has driver circuitry that is not stressed by the AC to DC conversion process. In addition, we have over-engineered the driver circuitry to be weather sealed and to perform well beyond the specifications required by the Enduro-Lume™ system.

For #2, LED light bulbs typically make extraordinary demands of the LED chips inside them - they drive them at very high currents and, as a result, at high temperatures. This accelerates their decline.

Enduro-Lume™ is designed to do the opposite. Instead of over-driving the LEDs with extra current to generate super brightness, Enduro-Lume™ massively under-drives them. By passing only trace amounts of current across the LEDs, their ambient temperature does not rise detectably and they operate at ideal conditions to achieve maximum longevity.

I just received my timepiece and it doesn't appear to be glowing - what should I do?

Enduro-Lume™ emits a subtle glow that is only visible in low light. If you have just received your timepiece, take it into a dark environment to double check whether the Enduro-Lume™ system is functioning properly. For any other problems, contact us at service@parweber.com.

I love automatic and mechanical watches - is Enduro-Lume™ compatible with these movements?

Absolutely, yes. However, our first timepiece features a Swiss-made quartz movement.

In our long-form discussion of that watch's design, Designing the Coefficient, we walk through our reasoning behind using a quartz movement: it is extremely low maintenance and makes a logical pairing with Enduro-Lume™, which requires its own battery to operate.

If you would be interested in seeing an Enduro-Lume timepiece with an automatic movement in the future, please email us at info@parweber.com. We'd love to hear from you.

What else should I know about Enduro-Lume™?

  • Each Enduro-Lume™ watch has its own illumination signature
All Enduro-Lume™ systems installed in PAR WEBER timepieces pass strict quality controls to ensure night visibility. Because we cherry-pick semiconductor emitters from the best on the market at any given time, there is some variation in the their characteristics from batch to batch. As a result, if you have two Enduro-Lume™ timepieces side by side, you may notice subtle differences between them. This is completely normal and gives each Enduro-Lume™ timepiece its unique fingerprint.

  • Enduro-Lume™ works best when your eyes are dark-adjusted
The Enduro-Lume system is specifically calibrated to work with the rod cells in the retina of the eye. These cells are responsible for vision in low light conditions. You may notice that when first turning off the lights, only the brightest areas around the perimeter of the dial are visible. After your eyes become night-adjusted and the rod cells begin to take over (starting after about 30 seconds in darkness), the entirety of the face will appear to become brighter.

Basic Operation

The Coefficient operates similarly to most timepieces with a date function. When pulled, the crown has two stops. Stop 1 controls the date. Rotate the crown from bottom to top (in a clockwise fashion) and the date will roll over incrementally. It will only advance, so be careful as you approach the desired date. Stop 2 controls the hands to set the time and also pauses the second hand, enabling you to precisely synchronize the Coefficient with an atomic clock or another timing device.

To ensure that the date correctly changes over at midnight every night, follow this procedure:

  1. Pull the crown out to Stop 1 and set the date to yesterday.
  2. Pull the crown to Stop 2 and advance the time until you pass midnight and the date automatically changes over to today’s date.
  3. Set the time, being sure to advance 12 hours if it is currently in the afternoon.
  4. Secure the crown by pushing it in two clicks.

Replacing the Batteries

The Coefficient takes two coin cell batteries: a 371 for the Ronda 715 movement, and a CR2025 for the Enduro-Lume™ system.

The Enduro-Lume™ system and quartz movement have replacement schedules that are synchronized and will last 2.5 to 4 years (depending on the battery manufacturer and operating conditions). This means that if the Enduro-Lume™ system stops glowing, or your watch stops ticking, it's time to change both batteries.

We recommend that you take your PAR WEBER timepiece to a jeweler or watchmaker to replace the batteries. While it is not a complicated procedure, it is best done by someone with experience to:

i. Avoid damaging the movement or the Enduro-Lume™ system, and
ii. Ensure that the watch is properly sealed and water resistant after the batteries have been replaced

One Year Warranty

The Coefficient is warrantied against any manufacturing defects for a full 12 months from the date of purchase. This warranty excludes any physical or cosmetic damage not caused by a manufacturing defect.

Out-of-Warranty Service and Repairs

Our objective is to build a superior product that requires little or no maintenance. To avoid any conflict of interest with that objective, we do not operate a service and repair business.

We are, however, committed to providing resources to restore damaged PAR WEBER timepieces to working order. Most components in your timepiece can be repaired or replaced by independent watch repair shops or jewelers. If an independent repair shop has questions about working on your timepiece, please refer them to us.

The one component that independent repair shops will not be able to replace is the Enduro-Lume™ system. In the rare instance that the Enduro-Lume™ system fails outside the warranty period, we can replace the system at our Chicago facility. Contact us and we can let you know what the current replacement fee is.
